Standing Consent

Published 2026-09-06

Standing consent is agreement given once, at a single point in time, that continues to authorize a recurring action — a repeated charge, an ongoing data feed — indefinitely afterward, until the person who gave it explicitly withdraws it. This differs from ordinary consent to a single, one-time action in an important way: the authorization it grants persists across many separate future events the person never individually approves.

Because the original approval and every subsequent action it authorizes are separated by time, sometimes a considerable amount of it, standing consent depends on the person understanding at the moment of granting it that they're authorizing an ongoing pattern, not a single event — and on a genuinely easy, discoverable way to withdraw it later, since a standing grant that's difficult to revoke functions, in practice, closer to a permanent one than a revocable one.
