Sneakernet Update

Published 2026-09-07

A sneakernet update moves data — a policy update, a software patch — into an isolated environment by physically carrying it in, typically on removable media, rather than transmitting it over any network connection, because no such connection exists to use. The name is a wry nod to the fact that the transport mechanism is, quite literally, someone walking it in.

This constrains an air-gapped environment's update cadence to whatever the physical process actually allows — updates can't happen more often than someone can physically deliver them, which is a meaningfully different operational rhythm than a system that can simply push a change the moment it's ready.
