Infrastructure as Code

Published 2026-09-05

Infrastructure as code defines a system's servers, networks, and permissions in versioned configuration files rather than through manual, one-off changes made directly against live infrastructure. This brings the same benefits code review brings to application logic — changes are diffable, reviewable, and reproducible — applied to the infrastructure itself.

It also means the access-control question shifts: rather than asking who can directly modify production infrastructure, the more consequential question becomes who can merge a change to the configuration that defines it, since a merged change is typically applied automatically. Access to the configuration repository and its deployment pipeline is functionally equivalent to direct infrastructure access, even when nobody involved ever touches a production system by hand.
