Attribute Freshness

Published 2026-09-07

Attribute freshness describes how up to date a given attribute is at the exact moment a policy decision evaluates it — whether 'is this employee still active' reflects the current instant or a value fetched and cached some time ago. An attribute-based policy can be logically correct and still produce the wrong real-world outcome if the attribute values it's actually evaluating against are stale, because the policy's correctness was never in question — the data feeding it was.

This is a distinct failure mode from a policy authoring mistake: the rule itself can be exactly right, and the decision can still be wrong, purely because an attribute used to evaluate it hadn't caught up with reality yet. Systems relying heavily on attribute-based decisions need an explicit answer for how fresh each attribute has to be for the decisions built on it to be trustworthy.
